Everyone asks the wrong first question. They ask which pen. The right first question is which filling system.
This almanac scores pens on a five-step price tier, I through V. Tier I is not "cheap" in the dismissive sense, it is the tier built for exactly this decision: a first pen, bought without knowing yet what you like. Ten pens in the archive sit at Tier I, from four dollars to eighty, and the spread between them is not really about price. It is about three questions, asked in order.
One. Cartridge, converter, or piston?
A cartridge pen takes a pre-filled ink tube: no mess, no learning curve, swap and go. Platinum Preppy and Platinum Plaisir both work this way, and both carry Platinum's slip-and-seal cap, a mechanism this almanac notes will sit capped for months and still start on contact. That is worth something to a first-time owner who is not going to write every day yet.
A cartridge/converter pen does the same thing but leaves a door open: swap in a converter later and you can fill from any bottle, not just that brand's cartridges. Pilot Metropolitan, Pilot Kakuno, Lamy AL-Star, and MUJI's aluminum round all take this route. It costs nothing now and buys you the entire ink aisle later.
A piston filler draws ink straight from the bottle into a built-in tank, no cartridge or converter at all. It is a genuinely different mechanism, not a budget compromise, and this archive has two of them at Tier I: the TWSBI Eco, whose demonstrator body shows a 1.7ml tank at work, and the TWSBI Diamond 580 AL, the same idea in an aluminum-trimmed shell. A piston pen means bottled ink from day one and no cartridges to keep buying.
Two. What does the nib actually need to do?
Every pen in this Tier I set ships with a steel nib, and steel at this tier is not a step down from gold, it is simply the correct material for a pen meant to survive a learning curve: drops, over-tightened caps, an ink you flush out weekly while you figure out what you like. The differences that matter are size and shape, not metal. The Kakuno ships in a size built around a smiling face on the nib and is scored in this archive as out-writing its price. The Kaweco Classic Sport is a pocket pen with a stub grind, meant to be posted (capped on the back) to reach full length, and octagonal so it will not roll off a desk.

Notice what does not move: nib material, ink safety, basic reliability. What moves is mechanism and body. At $4 you get a fine nib and a seal you can trust. At $33 you get a visible piston tank. The extra money is buying a different relationship with the ink, not a "better" pen in the abstract.
Buy the mechanism you will actually use, not the one that sounds more serious.
If you are not going to write daily yet, a cartridge pen removes every reason to hesitate. If you already know you will go through ink quickly and want to try many bottles, a cartridge/converter pen buys you the whole aisle for a few dollars more. Whichever one you pick, its first real decision arrives on day one anyway: not this page, but which paper you hand it. 動かないものに注目してほしい。ペン先の素材、インクの安全性、基本的な信頼性。動くのは機構と軸だ。4ドルなら信頼できる細字ペン先とシールが手に入る。33ドルなら見えるピストンタンクが手に入る。追加の金額が買っているのは、抽象的な「より良いペン」ではなく、インクとの違う関係なのだ。
より本格的に聞こえる方式ではなく、実際に使う方式を買え。
まだ毎日は書かないなら、カートリッジ式が迷う理由をすべて取り除いてくれる。すでにインクをどんどん使い、多くの瓶を試したいと分かっているなら、カートリッジ/コンバーター式が数ドルの差でインクの棚全体を買ってくれる。万年筆とは機構的に何なのかを、大金を使って知る前に理解したいなら、ティアIのピストン式が、ちょっとした外食一回分の値段でそれを教えてくれる。
